First-Aid Stain Treatment
!!
ALWAYS USE A CLEAN, WHITE ABSORBENT CLOTH AND PRE-TEST AN
INCONSPICUOUS AREA FIRST !!
The
four basic solutions are:
A. Dry
cleaning solvent
B. Detergent
solution - 1 teaspoon of gently detergent to half a pint
of water. (one for woollens is ideal)
C. Detergent
& vinegar solution - 1 teaspoon of white vinegar added
to the detergent solution (not malt vinegar)
D. Ammonia
solution - 1 teaspoon of branded household ammonia (from
hardware stores) to one cup of warm water
Tackle the stains as follows:
Alcohol,
coffee, tea, liquid foods & urine.
Blot up surplus spillage. Use solution C. Work from the
outer edge of the stain, using a little at a time, blotting
frequently with dry cloths.
Chocolate,
sweets, blood, glue, egg, ice cream, milk, soft drinks and
vomit.
Scrape up excess with a blunt knife. Use solution B starting
at the outer edge. Blot dry. Follow up with solution D.
Blot dry.
Solids,
fats, tar, chewing gum, oil, ointment and shoe polish.
Scrape up excess with a blunt knife. Use solution A followed
by solution C. Blot dry.
Unknown
stains.
Scrape up or bolt surplus spillage. Use solution A followed
by clean luke warm water. Blot dry. If further treatment
needed, use either solution B or C. Blot dry. Remember do
not rub at the carpet as this could cause pile restoration
from which your carpet will not recover.
Caution:
No carpet is absolutely stain proof.
Most stains can be avoided or removed by immediate treatment,
if not they can become permanent stains. In general hot
liquids, bleach and products containing natural dyes such
as curry, mustard, herbal teas, etc can cause permanent
discolouration.
